Quotas and increasing seats in educational institutions

Do you think that increasing seats in educational institutions is a solution to the quotas ?

frenchita said...
Yes I suppose. That seems to be a likely temporary solution to accommodate both quota and antiquota people .Hope it doesn't churn too many graduates out ,wasting effort and money of government , only to lose them to foreign lands

DecentmonKey said...
Yes, it is a sensible solution.. and Frenchita has a good point too. Cheers..

No, i donot think so. See there are 2 things, things that are right and thinga that are wrong. existence of a blind quota, is like pandering to the whims of a votebank. now , i am also of veiw that if we have substantiatied prove that so and so people, should be given space for so and so reasons, we have no problems. after all whats gotta be done is gotta be done, dude. But increasing general seats and quota seats, both of them, is temporary, its like putting a nipple in a baby's mouth without finding the cause for the crying. It,s an escape route. Its a solution and not a definitive step that should have been taken. Now if we work with conscience and think, quotas with current system of applications dont make sense.why because, they have quotas for women, every different state has different quotas, in some places like mp there is 69 percent quota!that is not justified. Solution is in amendment of the existing law, bill. a new system, strong but bold steps should be taken which are right. Iam not against reservations, but they should be sensible.and not hit u on the face.We work with poor people, i have been with patients who had only 14 rupees in their pocket, coming and going back fair.We as interns have raised money for patients for emergency operations, distributing sample medicines is a common pratice in every govt. hospitals by the residents. We are moving towards a culture where every body wants a change, with proper infrastructure, where in every body is looking at transparency, mainly influenced with the incoming of mnc,s. and thats exactly what our fight is for.We also want that order transparency in the system called "education".Be it class 1 in the village of morena, or Surgery in aiims. Every election, a new party comes and increases a different quota, this is ridiculous dude. Think about any guy on the street playing the part of Aamir khan in RDB on quota basis, thats exactly what putting quota's at specilization levels is akin to.taknig the credit from the guys who should be doing the stuff plus also missing on a marvelous performance.

Yes, it can be. But unfortuantely, we don't have enough teachers for that. Very few of children today would tell you they want to be professors or teachers. If we can encourage more people to join into the teaching field, i think it is the best solution available. But today, when medical colleges have been caught for presenting drivers, peons and even canteen boys as professors to complete the MCI norms, it looks like a far fetched solution.

lavina said...
Yes, it may be a step towards solving the problem, but cannot be the only solution in any case. Other reformative steps to support this are required. More over instead of quotas for a few classes, we should have sponsorship for the economically backward.

rajesh (Kachra King) said...
whether it solves the purpouse of Quota or not .. increase in educational institutions and seats is equired looking at the growing population. But Instead first the primary schools and colleges should be increased to give basic education to everyone. That would answer the reservation issue. Its basically education that the backward classes dont get. So why fight over the advanced education. That should be puerly on merit.

blogesh said...
i dont think that is far sighted solution, instead a stop gap arrangement to reconcile the issue on temporary basis. a much more thought need to be given followed by action for true upliftment of the backwards.

tejbir said...
what is the real issue? reservation or politicians' vested interests thats dividing our indian society on frivolous grounds? aren't these reservations in various walks of life from professions, to parliament a subtle way to acknowledge existence of the wretched caste system in our society? even though our constitution asks us to abolish it!!! when will we treat our constitution as our Geeta, Granth Sahib, Bible, Quran????

Vrij said...
No way is that gonna help.. today OBC, tomm this minority, day after that minority.. this game is gonna continue. Instead, all primary n secondary education to backward classes should be made FREE, and better if special schools/jr colleges r opened for them. But when it comes to proff edu, NO RESERVATIONS watsoever... period.

well i dont think its really feasible........ because more seats means more Graduates/P. Graduates.... thats means there will be more unemployment......... and more unemployment means more crime and more politicians....(anyways...criminals and politicians are 2 sides of same coin)...... well but I dont agree with Frenchita's comment bout losing Indians to foreign land..... coz before all this reservation stuff, US consulate is always busy with VISA processings... I dont think people go out of India b'coz of reservation thing..... they are going as they wanna go......there's no any other reason for that...... if anyone says that because of reservation he/she will go abroad so that will be just an excuse, nothing else.......

Merit alone should be the criteria.....no quota system for me...... quota system is just a way to beat the system.....and is a tool in the hand of the corrupt.... i believe in one thing, "FIRST DESERVE THEN DESIRE" If u r not upto it.....then don't ask for it.....

Impact of blogs on society

What do you think about the impact of blogs on society ?

blogesh said...
Impact on Society :- Good - people get 2 know literary, penning and many more skills about fellow bloggers on the forum. exchange of good writeups, thoughts, analysis of current topics etc. Bad - Blogs which make their way on TOI homepage , all except a few end up in religion bashing, bad mouthing. Bottomline - To enhance your GK on *both sides above * keep blogging :-) . I would always prefer first one.

SKJ said...
HI boss: The impact of blogs on society - it gives them a reason to think otherwise also which is sometime a lot different from the news. It improves writing style as well as forces to think the other side of the story. As blogs are mostly written by the ones who are not professional writers, even the boring subjects are written interestingly. Like i hv just written something on politics... :) :D :D :D :D cheers...skj

blogging though has grown very fast but its not significant enough as yet to have any impact on the society blog is just a small aspect of the phenomenon called internet! and as far as indian society goes the impact of internet is yet to be felt in a big effective way! so there's a long way to go b4 blogs on themselves have any effect

I like what Blogesh has said here .. Like Tej explains , not much impact on society yet . My personal experience has been positive . Lots of exchange of ideas , diff. personalities to deal with , new abillity to understand the opposing view ,meeting nice folks , learning to like poetry ,and reserving my less favourable comments for fear of hurting others . ( restraint )

yes in india it hasn't caught up on the effect on society as yet.. But in the future, i see the blogging world to rise as an independent media form where each blogger is a reporter, editor, cameraman and producer rolled into one. What we are going to see is a great stream of views and activities, management of which would be a difficult as well as a profitable business ie managing of blogs by the servers. Many bloggers who have very successful blogs have gone into forming their own servers and collecting revenue from advertisements. I see many bloggers choosing this way of blogging in the future. But blogs would, in the future, be used as a method of mass tipping off of any matter. as seen in Kaavya Vishwanathan's case, in the blogging world, justice is done Town-Hall style ie the panchayat style you can call it. Whether this is good or bad, cannot be judged right now.

DecentmonKey said...
To add on to some nice feedback already here, blogs are a good platform for expression and to be heard on topics of interest of the blogger.. since every individual is part of the society, it does have a small impact now.. and surely heading towards holding a bigger impact in future.. Cheers..

Vrij said...
Frankly.. None. The blogging community is just too small to have sort of practical impact as yet on the society.

ellen said...
For whatever reason people keep a blog it still is a slow stride to what it can become someday. Right now it serves beautifully as a channel or bridge to other peoples, cultures, and ideas..... and serves wonderfully as one's expression of 'self'. Just one thing tho, I hope this priviledge won't be used for 'bad' --for abusive material or intent which could hurt people.

Impact on society: well well well........ I think Blooging cool.. Coz it gives people a space, a openeing to express themeselves.... write watever you wanna write.. and enjoy..... It becomes Uncool when at times someone expresses his/her view and if someone doesnt agree then at times not reqd war.... thats at times irritating.......... Else blogging is fun... :-)

Considering that an unbelievably small percentage of our population has access to let alone read these blog, I doubt there is any impact. However, all large movements have small beginnings :-)

Safety of Indian in Afganistan

Do you think that India should send more security forces to Afganistan for the safety of Indian workers ?

Vrij said...
No. Instead, India should advise the workers to stay away from A'stan or head there at their own risk.. Ditto for all troubled nations.. Iraq, Iran, maybe even Pak !

frenchita said...
Depends how many Indians are in Afghanistan ,are they doing our governments work or their own ? what about the Indian embassy there ? are they safe .. Indian government should insist , nay threaten the Afghani government to take more precautions and utilize their military or whatever to protect the Indians seeking employment there .Every Indian's life is precious , nothing less will be tolerated .

Sumit said...
I think all the Indians should be called back from Afghanistan, and Indian forces should be sent to clear off... the Sick Taliban from there.

tejbir said...
since indians working there are doing more of a rehabilitation work whether through private cos or NGOs or any other way so its the responsibility of the entire world to see that people from all nations toiling there to rebuild the razed country are given full protection these terrorists are the most coward people dont show their faces kill and run attack vulnerable innocents

Kissing/Hugging in a public place

Should action be taken against a couple for kissing/hugging in a public place?

lavina said...
You cannot impose a universal rule that kissing and hugging in public in illegal! can u?? Anything that is obscene and vulgur should not be a part of the public display scheme!! Had it been in France or any other Nation where these things are acceptable, there would have been no issues at all. It is India, couples should understand the culture and social acceptability norms. Imposing bans does not serve any purpose according to me. Arn't we living in a civilized world?? Don't we understand what should be done and what not?? Self regulation is yhe key word. And what's gonna come next?? Ban on children shouting at their parents? ban on children not insulting their teachers? Ban on wot all..................................... oops, too long a comment?? :)

Gul said...
Ji haan bilkul action hona chahiye. ye hamari sanskruti nahi hai.public place ke apne maryaadayaye hai.jinhe subke follow kerna chahiye.

pearl said...
I dont think kissing or hugging in public is vulgar.. its just a moment of affection.... Yes as long as no nudity is there...display of affection just by huging or a kiss should not be banned... If ppl can hold hands in public ..why cant they hug in public????

Vrij said...
Well.. I'd take the middle road here... If its just a decent peck, its ok.. and of course, it just cant be in the middle of the road with a million ppl watching.. if its in a quiet park(which IS a public place).. then wats the issue.. or do we expect a couple to kiss only within the confines of their bedrooms? Oh, how boring that would be!! :-(

punk edge said...
NOoo000OOOOO i mean unless its crossing the limits of obscenity. nothin wrong in display of affection

frenchita said...
This question is a slippery one ! It ALL depends .It does draw attention from the public , especially when the rich , young folk ( this means the goras and then the page 3 people ) are doing it .Little children will have a field day .. Ideally should be done in the privacy of home or car ... he he ... If it is a gay couple , then more museebat ! No legal action need be taken but some dirty looks can be given in the couple's direction . If they are shameless , they will continue , I guess .That's the best that can be done at this point . :)

ellen said...
Is a sense of propriety or consideration and respect for other people's sensibilities no longer acceptable in our time? I think that there is a right time and place for everything. Since a blatant display of 'affection' in public may offend some people, perhaps this could serve as a guide - "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." Meaning, know where you are. If you're in Italy where the Italians make no fuss about public show of affection, I guess you'd be in good company. lolz But if you were in a conservative country or culture, it would be wise to put your best conservative foot forward. And that includes manners, too. :-)

Divya said...
Nah! No one really cares.....at least Divya doesn't - if you like PDA and wanna do it - totally up to you!!

Sumit said...
though it should not be illegal, but i think that the people themselves have to be conscious of the fact that such display remains within the limit of decency....
