The Haryana Government on Friday announced that the four Olympians from Haryana -- boxers Vijender Kumar, Jitender Kumar and Akhil Kumar and wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt -- who reached quarterfinals in the Beijing Games would be appointed as Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs). Do you think that government has taken the right decision?

Virtualscorpio says: i think the question is rediclious in itself। In a country where posts/jobs/admissions etc. etc. are reserved/appointed for considerations like caste/creed/religion etc, & no other reason, then atleast these few sportspersons have done much more than most. so, to me this question does not come up for opinions, its just got to be done.

Beijing Olympics and India

Co-ed hostels in India

Is co-ed hostels conducive to Indian background?

Busybee says: "Co-ED" hostel is an oxymoron :D Whats wrong with a combined hostel, wrt Indian background ? anyone staying in a hostel has plenty of freedom even otherwise, to do just what they want। We make too much out of our "Indian" background... like the rest of the world has no culture or background. unisex hostels are a better idea if one has to focus on education tho :D.

I now speak from my personal experience. I have been interacting with youngsters, both boys & girls, of 15 to 30. The amount of things I have learnt is amazing. Parents would never ever imagine that. They have had much more exposure to sex even while in 9th standard or so. This has been confided by girls as well as boys. My advice to all of them has always been " There is nothing right or wrong. This is exactly what I had told my children too when they were in final years of schooling. Be more friends to your children than parent. JEE fails to get the best

The director and the dean of IIT-Madras have called for radical changes in the JEE, saying that the coaching institutes were enabling many among the less-than-best students to crack the test and keeping girls from qualifying. Do you think that JEE is failing to get the best?

Busybee says: hmm... this one is difficult to comment on। Mostly girls arent that much into engg :D. The % of girls is less than 1/10 of the guys॥at IIT Mum, if I am not mistaken. If what he says is true, then the girls also shud go to the coaching class way.. The best cant be kept away... by the less than the best. Hard to buy argument that.... meaning that the best wud reach the top w/o an IIT degree too. An IIT degree is not the ultimate guarantee of success..

Blasts in Ahmedabad

Do you think that the lack of tough anti-terror laws and weak intelligence machinery should be blamed for the serial blasts in Ahmedabad?

Jaksha Shah says: Before we blame Government or the law, we have to look into us। What we do to prevent this, nothing, though we are the soft targets for them. After repeated advertisement to watch people around you for doubtful behavior, they successfully plant bombs at more than 20 places in 2 cities. None of the citizen saw them. What politicians do ? They will blame each other and do not let police work properly. If few of them are arrested and beaten by the public, they may not do that again. Those who plant the bombs are more probably not armed. Though tough rules will help to minimize the frequency of blasts, it won't stop that.

The girl next door says:M not very sure of increasing the number of police forces will help. We are a vast and diversified country which lacks proper channels of communications. How would u explain the serial blasts across 2 cities and not even the intelligence agencies having a clue regarding them. Even if we increase the number of police personnels if we do not know where to seek information from and how to I doubt it would help us anywhere in keeping a step ahead of terrorism. Mechanisms such as social security numbers could go a long way in ensuring we have everyone accounted for. Govt likewise should rise about the parliament dramas and take steps to protect the common man and not just dhoti clad netas and celebs. As an individual we all should be alert of suspicious people and objects and not just shy away from raising an alarm , even if its a false one. Its very sad how even authorities at railways stations are so negligent about the safety of commuters.. most of the screening machines at major stations dont work and baring these few days of "high alert" one could not find too many police personnels around. All in all we are on our own.

Survival of UPA Government

Do you thing that UPA Government would complete its full term?

MMS will go in for early polls, in all probability, around the time a new president is ushered into oval office. Will we say MMS sarkaar did not last full term if this is how it turns out? The nuclear deal will go through. If UPA, with SP support, does not manage the numbers inside the house (majority of attending and voting NO) to defeat the no confidence motion that the left might table, and has to resign, then it will remain as caretaker sarkaar till early next year. CAn we say, if that is how it turns out, it is not full term? In my view, the political dynamincs has changed entirely since last elections in 2004. It is time for all alliances to be recast based on a re-assessment of geo-political and geo-economical realities as will as the emerging power centres in international relations. Giving six months for such a process, it makes sense to have elections by late 2008 and early 2009. The added benefit of early elections: a) the campaign vehicles will raise less dust in the rural areas. b) there will be enough to eat after the harvest and industrial bonuses. c) there will be enough suger, cane and alcohol to entice voters to the booths. d) school-kids can sleep in the day and study during night under parental watch. e) anyone can add to this list, which i snot exhaustive॥

Quotas in the teaching faculty of IITs

The government has ordered IITs to introduce - with "immediate effect" - quotas in the teaching faculty for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and OBCs. Do you thing that the decision is in the interest of country?

Niceguy251 says: It may be done without lowering the standards of selection criteria and if vacancy is not filled it should not be rolled over to next session but reverted to general category as shortage of faculty will definitely affect teaching quality and standards adversly।

Petro price hike

The Indian government is considering a hike in the prices of transport fuels to help petroleum marketing companies tide over the burden on account of crude oil topping $135 per barrel in international markets. Is the petro price hike justified?

At $135/bbl Brent Crude, what should be cost of production at refinery excluding customs and excise duties? 3. What is the capex investment to refine a bbl of crude (assuming a blend of crude grades on import market? Let us consider RPL's mega refinery at Jamnagar as anchmark. 4. What should be the ROI in business? 5. What iould be the ROI for distributors from the refinery outlets to the pumps? 6. If administered mechanism is not dismantled and the refineries are not allowed to sell their products to make profits, why should they remain in business? 7. If the distributors don't make a profit, why should they be in business? 8. If private enterprise is killed because all it wants is profits and profit is a diry word, then who will do the business/ Of course, the government, right? 9. If the government runs businesses according to laws that it makes, what prevents it from making laws to balance the books? 10, From does the mbooks come from? Print the notes, may be? 11. Why should I and you pay for inefficient energy use? When market sets the prices, the demand or efficiency will correct, at the break-even price. Why should that not happen? 12. Why are we not clamoring for complete dismantling of administered price regime? 13. WHY?

English and India

English has become the 3rd BIggest Medium of Instruction. Do you think that though English is not the first language of nation but in reality it hold top position?

We all know that most of technical & scientific education is carried out in english as it has the huge store of such information. English has been accepting words from other languages and making it universal. Examples are many, just to quote some " Pyajama, Curry, Minar and Bandobast etc. Each nation has it's national language and it is their linking language. Can we Indians keep our heads raised and say the same for Hindi with conviction without taking shelter benind official status? I have stayed almost in all the regions of our vast country and I can vouch for it that it is either the local language or english which was required by me to communicate while being out of Hindi belt. We can not force but have to make persons understand that we need a national language and obvisiouly it will be the one spoken by the majority.

Serial blasts and Tourism

National Knowledge Commission and IIT

Concerned over the "glaring regional imbalance" in the availability of engineering education,the National KnowledgeCommission (NKC) has favoured elite institutions like IITs adopting some engineering institutions to raise their standards.Do you think that elite institutions like IITs and NITs should "mentor" the new institutions in order to help raise their standards?

Busybee says: Yes, why not ? It would raise the standards of the other colleges. But then the final product depends on the input of student quality as well...

Lionking says: this is a good move by the NKC ... the IITs are very reputed institutes worldwide ... and if the IITs can mentor the very many engineering colleges that churn out vast quantity of engineering graduates ... who are unfortunately not well recognized as IIT graduates ... then they sure will be having good prospect ... and the name that IITs has had hand in those institutes will be in the back of the mind of the people hiring those graduates ... IITs mentoring the lesser engineering institutes will set some "standard" for those institutes which is good ...

As far as showing stars and all is concerned it is not so much. It seems balanced. Of course new concept which we need to get used to.

Death Penalty and India

The death penalty is as inhuman as the crime which motivates it.

For other case life imprisonment not just for 14 years but till death be awarded with hard labour and proceds of such work should go to dependents of the victims, if there are no dependents then money should go for educating underprivileged children though some honest NGOs.

Supreme Court and Landlord

The Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that tenants in Delhi who used leased premises for commercial purposes can be evicted if the landlord required it for bonafide purpose. Do you welcome the SC ruling?

Niceguy251 says: We have to first see if it is residential property which is being used by tenent for commercial purpose then it is illegal as it is but if it is commercial then we need to be fair to both. It is ridiculous that rent of Rs 100.00 pm is being paid for shops in Conaught Place by old tenents and at the same time if owner wants to evict tenent just to have little more rent is also not palatable. The law should protect both. There should be a legal lease document for fixed period and it could be renewed only if both parties agree. Owner should not be allowed to evict tenent during currency of agreement except if it is being used for illegal purposes and similarly if the agreement is over and tenenat is not vacating the place should be sealed pending judgement. And in such cases the tenent should be asked to pay legal costs as well as penal rent ( say triple the pervailing market rent ) if it is proved he is at fault.

OBC Quota and Premier Institutes

The much-debated 27 per cent OBC quota will be implemented at prestigious educational institutions like IITs and IIMs nationwide. Do yiu think that the SC judgement will only affect the brand value of the premier institutes?

Vamsi says: i am not against people in the lower strata of the society getting opportunities to study and make a living for themselves. so, based on this the judgement of SC is a welcome. the premier institutes increasing seat to accomidate them is quite logical. but care must be taken not to dilute the standard of education in these 'premier institutes' as they are pride of india !

Niceguy251 says: I am all for reservation why 27% but maybe 50% but with following RESERVATIONS : It should be only for economically backward as it will definitely cover SC / ST / OBC . It has to be merit based. This is what needs focus. We can not have professionals like Doctors or Engineers who have just scraped through the examinations. What we need to do is that give say 10% allowance on marks. Let me explain this. If seats are 100, so open category seats are at present 73, if 73rd person has secured 82% bring it down to 72% for reserved category and all those from that category who are above that be taken to fill 27 seats. If any seats are left then it can to back to merit list one by one following the same principle till all seats are filled. This way we do afford opportunity to those who need it without comprosing quality. We should try to spread education facilities to all so competetion can be fair. For this fee concessions may be given to needy class. AND LET US NOT POLITISE THIS ISSUE.

Indian Premier League and Media
